Meteora

The complex of six Eastern Orthodox monasteries built vertically on the rock towers of Meteora is one of the most awe inspiring in Greece. Hermits and mystics have been staying in rock caves here since the 9th century AD, although the first monastery wasnt established until around 1340. The steepest monastery Roussanou is inhabited by nuns who used to be winched up and down with ropes and nets as late as 1930.
