Did you know that Greece’s winery tradition goes as far as more than 2000 years ago? In ancient years, the most famous and popular vineyards were in a town near Corinth, called Nemea. An archaeological site exists to this day in the location of the ancient town, with the village of Ancient Nemea being right next to it and the new town of Nemea following it. Legend has it that Hercules, the demi-god hero, fought and killed the Nemean Lion, as the first of his 12 Labors. During the Antiquity, the town hosted the Nemean Games, which were celebrated in the 11th Nemean odes of Pindar. It would be suffice to say that Nemea still remains a town with both archaeological and agricultural interest.

That is exactly what the OpaTours team thought and therefore created the Nemea Winery Tour, in association with visitnemea.com. The blog is an online guide to the Nemean wine land with a purpose to introduce visitors to the history, winery and people of Nemea and to offer authentic and unforgettable experiences. It is exactly this type of experience that OpaTours aims to offer to its visitors.

The 9-hour Nemea Winery Tour is the ideal daytrip from Athens. Guests of the tour have the opportunity to learn about modern Greek wine and its birthplace in ancient times. The beginning of the tour is a selected winery, where visitors can learn about the process of making wine and the indigenous variety of Agiorgitiko grape. However, do not think you will just be hearing about the wine when taking the tour. You can try many different wines before starting your trip with a visit to the Nemean Wine Makers Association, where you will also be able to taste many different Greek grape varieties. What is more, you can follow a Masterclass Agiorgitiko and other wine seminars depending on whether you are a professional or just an aficionado.

OpaTours, recognizing the cultural importance of Nemea, aims at introducing it to as many people as possible, always creating – together with visitnemea.com – tours and seminars for those who wish to learn more about wine and its combination with food. Stay tuned, more will be announced soon!
