The Acropolis

Overlooking the city was the Acropolis. The Acropolis was the central fortress and principal sanctuary of Athena located on a natural limestone outcrop.

The Erechtheum

Home to the famous Caryatids and considered the most sacred of the sites of the Acropolis, the Erechtheum is a temple on the North side of the Acropolis dedicated to both the goddess Athena as well as Poseidon. Throughout history the erechtheum has served as many purposes, including as a church and temple, but also as a residence for a harem.

Stoa of Eumenes

Between the Theater of Dionysus and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus lies the Stoa of Eumenes, a column-lined arcade on the South Slope of the Acropolis. A gift from the king Eumenes, the stoa was built along the ancient road around the Acropolis and was used for promenading, as well as for stalls to sell their wares during the long performances given at the theater.

Areopagus Hill

The Areopagus Hill is a rocky outcropping situated to the near north-west of the Acropolis, with a paved courtyard before it. It was used as a meeting place for council members.

Athenian Agora

The Athenian Agora was the civic centre of Athens, located northwest of the Acropolis, on ground sloping towards the Eridanus River. This large open square served a wide variety of public functions and was lined on all four sides by principal administrative buildings of the city.

Panathenaic Way

The principal road of ancient Athens, the Panathenaic Way is flanked by numerous ancient archaeological landmarks and once lead from the main city gate through the ancient Agora, and up to the Acropolis. The Panathenaic Way also served as the main road for the great procession of the Panathenaic festival as well as the route for chariot races.
